QGIS – Map Tips Not Showing

Question:

I am hovering over my map features but the Map Tips are not showing – why?

Answer:

To very quickly view the attributes for any map feature, you can choose the Show MAP TIPS tool and hover over any feature in the map.

The values being shown in the map for each layer are defined using the Display Name in the Layer Properties. As per the below, here we have chosen to show the STWARD_NAM field for the Liverpool Wards Layer.

When you now Hover over the layer in the map, the Show Map Tips tool should auto show the STWARD_NAM value.

However you may find that the Show Map Tips only appear after a brief delay and you may believe that the Map Tips aren’t working. The DELAY can be configured in the Settings > Options menu, within the Canvas & Legend tab, where the default Map Tips Delay value is 820 Milliseconds.

Change the Delay to 0 and now when you hover over the map features, the Map Tips show immediately!
