Rule Based Filters

Rule based view filters have been around for many years in Revit and are a useful tool to affect and control the visibility or graphic display of elements.

For any View Type, you can apply Filters to control what elements you see in your Revit building model as well as how they appear in that view.

This is a key feature to use for:

    • Tracking the progress of the development of your Revit Project.

    • Coordinating elements between Disciplines, Systems and Linked Files.

    • Presenting your model to other Revit Users (or non-Revit users).

To create a Filter.

  1. Go to the View tab > Graphics panel Filters button.
  2. At the bottom left-hand corner, click on the New button > enter a name for the Filter. (This Filter is automatically Rule-Based because you cannot create a Selection Filter this way. You need to create a Selection Set.)
  3. Use the Filter Rules dropdown menus to specify by what common factor which elements will be affected by the new Filter.
  4.  Under Categories > select one or more Categories of elements to be affected by the Filter. Creating Filters 2.png
  5. Click OK.

Note: Creating and Assigning Filters are another view configuration and customization tool that can be developed and deployed in Revit project templates.
