I was recently asked a question on whether it was possible to colour section lines in a project and have the colours identify different section types i.e. make a coordination section line look different from a detail section or a framing section.

This is a very easy thing to do, making use of a vital Revit feature, View Filters. Within the project template, create a series of Sectional View families. The easiest way of achieving this is to duplicate the default section type and name it accordingly i.e. Coordination Section, Framing Section, Reinforcement Section etc.

Once complete, create a series of corresponding view filters, set to section categories using the Family and Type criteria containing a text string that exists in the Type Name parameter.

These filters can have colours, line types and line weights assigned to aid drawing clarity.

Using the same technique can also hide undesired sections with the visibility property.

View Filters and other tools can be saved as view template which can be used to ensure section line display is consistent throughout the project.

Within the Revit view the section tag will display as blue to indicate its hyperlink nature, but that isn’t usually required on the outputted document. So, to suppress the view colour, configure the print setting options to view links in blue as unticked.

Place the view onto a sheet and print with the output looking like the result below.

Features like view filters, view templates and project template setup are some of the topics covered on our range of Revit training courses.
