Introduction

To change a rail profile in Revit, select the railing, go to "Edit Type," then navigate to the "Rail Structure" (or "Top Rail" depending on the element) and select the desired profile from the dropdown menu.

For intermediate rails: Navigate to the "Rail Structure" section within the "Edit Type" window.

For top rails: Find the "Top Rail" section within the "Edit Type" window.

In this blog we will edit the top rail profile. The top rail is the highest element of a railing. It is created by selecting a 2D profile and a height.

Use the tab key to select the top rail. Select Edit Type and in the Type Properties dialogue box change the original rectangular profile to a more decorative profile as illustrated.

Note: Top Rails have their own system families and that is why we can edit them independently of the rest of the railing structure.
