Revit Tip – ‘Tagging’ Revit Link Files

I was recently asked if it was possible to tag linked files within a Revit project. Not the elements within it but the actual file itself detailing the reference source of the file and push that information to show in a model view.

For several years Revit has been able to schedule Revit links and provide the name and the file name in a tabular list. Unfortunately though there is, at the time of writing, no way to tag a link and get that information to display. However, by utilising the power of Dynamo scripting, parameter name information can be extracted into a list and then that information can be pushed to a conventional text element to be read in the drawing. This is not dynamically linked like a tag element, but it can be easily updated by re-applying the script giving users the ability to quasi-tag their linked files.

The sample script shown in the image above selects all the linked files in the project and harvests the Name parameter and builds a list of names. This list of names is then pushed to the Textnote.Bylocation node, along with positioning, justification and font selection options.
