In previous Revit versions the measure tool was not available in 3D views. Users could only place dimensions, which required the setting of a work plane to dimension from.  This process therefore was not convenient for quick measurement tasks.

However, with the 2023 release, measurements can be taken in 3D views, locating reference planes within families as well as object snap overrides to get precise measurements from awkwardly placed elements like sloping beams. Just like AutoCAD and SketchUp products, the measure tool can add up sequential lengths on different 3D planes with the total being displayed on the options bar.
