New Revit users may be a little confused over what is defined in Room Areas compared to Areas.

It is important to differentiate between Room Area tags and Area tags. Use Area tags to calculate overall footage of a building, or areas that are not distinguished as a “space”. Utilise Room Area tags when defining rooms, such as any space enclosed by walls. Use the walls to frame the area and use Room Separation lines to divide spaces with openings. Do NOT use Area to calculate areas of rooms, as it will not populate in-room schedules correctly.

Rooms

A room in Revit is considered as spatial division of your project based on elements such as walls, floors, roofs and ceilings. Revit can compute areas, volume and perimeter of the rooms and can schedule them as well.

Area Plans

Area plans are created to calculate and show gross building or rent-able building area. You can also add colour fill schemes to your area plans. Areas can also be calculated and scheduled.
