I was recently asked how to split columns within Revit either to a level, reference plane or a user defined point. The Split command can be used on columns since Revit 2017, but what about at a reference level above a slab and on multiple elements? Whilst columns could be split by using the Copy monitor function, it doesn’t always fit with certain workflows. An easy solution has been provided with a free Add-in from StructSoft Solutions.

Once installed, a button appears allowing users to split multiple or single columns by either a point (similar to split), level or reference plane. This is a lot easier than the conventional method of selection sets and the copy monitor tool! In addition, the split can be defined with a gap, also a missing option using conventional methods.

Whilst splitting options for other elements has improved in recent years, this Add-in is a worthwhile addition to Revit’s functions and makes certain tasks much easier and quicker.

The Column Splitter Add-in is available on the Autodesk App store and works for Revit versions 2019-2023 and can be downloaded from the link below.
