New sketch symbols can be defined and saved either locally (in the current drawing), or saved to a library so they are available to use in multiple drawing files. There is a “Symbol Library” subfolder under Design Data that stores all custom libraries created in Inventor (default path is C:\Users\Public\Documents\Autodesk\Inventor [version]\Design Data\Symbol Library).

The “Define New Symbol command” will launch the sketch mode. Once the symbol has been saved and named, it will appear Under drawing resources -> Sketch Symbols. It can then be saved to a Symbol Library.

Users can either choose an existing library or create a new one:

Symbol libraries can have multiple subfolders to help organise symbols. The library file is essentially an .IDW/ .DWG which can be migrated to a newer release when Inventor is upgraded.
