“This upgrade cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade may update a different version of the program...”

While updating the Autodesk Vault Professional server 2023 an error was raised preventing the update. The error states that the product we want to update is not present or a different version of the software that you are trying to update.

This could be caused by the previous update not being installed. We can check this by looking in the Control Panel under Apps and Features to see what updates are currently installed. You can check for all the current available updates for your software on the Autodesk software page under your Autodesk Profile - https://manage.autodesk.com/products

Looking at our installed updates, we may see that the latest update version is installed, so there could be an issue with the update or associated files.

This could be for several reasons, and the simple solution is to repair the update with the update installer. First we should clean up our system in preparation for the repair to ensure no existing temporary files can cause conflicts with the repair.

Open windows explorer and enter %temp% in the address bar to access your temporary files folder and delete all the entries that you can. Some apps that are running will be accessing this folder, so it is ok to skip the files you cannot remove.

Once the temp folder has been cleaned up, download the update installer from the software page mentioned previously (if you do not have the installer for the latest update downloaded it is a good idea to download this update also at this step, ready for later use).

Once downloaded, run the installer with administrator privileges and select the Repair option.

Once the repair step has completed, it is good practice to restart your system (if possible). This will ensure any background changes, like registry keys will fully update.

Once the server has restarted, retry the installation of the latest update.

This should resolve the conflict and allow the installation to complete as expected. You can check if the update was successful by running the software and looking in the about section under Help.
